Assessment
How you are assessed

Both assessments must be submitted and both are marked. Your final grade reflects the quality of your work across both submissions.

Written Assessment

An operations plan: a structured written document outlining how a department would be organised, staffed, managed and monitored across a defined period. This is a practical rather than purely academic task.

Interview Assessment

A 10–15 minute Viva with your personal tutor. Depending on the course, this may take the form of a structured tutorial, a defence of your written work, a presentation, a problem-solving discussion or a guided Q&A — designed to assess your genuine understanding and ability to engage with the subject beyond the page.

Distinction
Exceptional work across both assessments. The written submission demonstrates sophisticated argument, strong evidence and academic rigour. The Viva shows confident, detailed command of the subject.
A hand-signed Distinction certificate is issued. The highest grade awarded by The Short Course Institute.
Merit
Strong work with clear understanding and well-structured argument. Minor gaps in depth or evidence but overall demonstrates solid command of the course material across both the written and Viva assessments.
A hand-signed Merit certificate is issued. A strong result that reflects genuine academic competence.
Pass
Satisfactory completion of both assessments to the required standard. Work shows adequate understanding of the subject with some areas for development identified in the written feedback.
A hand-signed Pass certificate is issued. Confirms successful completion of the assessed short course.
Fail
The required standard was not met across one or both assessments. Full written feedback is provided explaining where the work fell short and what would be needed to reach a Pass.
No certificate is issued. A retake is available upon repayment of the course fee.
